Who we are

SIGHTED is an EU-funded research project focused on developing a novel neural implant to restore functional vision in people who have lost their sight. Building on the outcomes of the NeuraViPeR project, SIGHTED will advance an existing proof-of-concept towards a clinically validated device.

The implant works by electrically stimulating the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a brain region that relays visual information from the eyes to the visual cortex. This approach is made possible through the Fountain Probe—a neural interface designed to deliver high-resolution stimulation using over 1,000 flexible electrodes. Its design allows for greater coverage and precision than existing technologies, addressing key challenges in the field of vision restoration.

Throughout the project, the consortium will also address essential steps toward future clinical translation, including technical validation, regulatory preparation, and refinement of the overall implementation pathway.

Phosphoenix B.V., a Dutch MedTech SME leads the project in collaboration with the Institute de la Vision in Paris.
